Ceramics education in Turkey are given in 13 faculties of fine arts, 7 faculties of engineering, 16 faculties of education, 18 schools for advanced vocational studies in total of 33 universities, and in high schools of fine arts and high schools for industrial vocational studies. Ceramics artists, draftsmen, engineers and technicians are taught and trained in these institutions. There is an increase in the number of institutions giving ceramics education in the last years. Besides the changing education policy, the rapid development in this sector and the need for the staff in parallel of this have been influential.
Admissions to higher education at a certain base score, determined every year by universities, with the first level of University Entry Exams held on the country basis in Turkey and success in special efficiency exams in arts held at universities, are required for entering ceramics departments in faculties of fine arts.
Ceramics education in Turkey has begun at the first art institution, the State Academy of Fine Arts -formerly called Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi / School of Fine Arts. The ceramics department was founded by Ismail Hakki Oygar in 1939 on the wish of Mustafa Necati, the National Education Minister of the time. Upon his return Vedat Ar, completing his ceramics education in Paris, has formed the staff under the name of tile atelier in the Applied Arts Department. Fine Arts Academy was made Mimar Sinan University with arrangements of the Board of Higher Education (YOK) and ceramics was brought under the Applied Arts Department in 1982. Glass education was also included to this context. Artistic and industrial studies in educational programs are held in a certain balance bearing in mind the economic and cultural conditions of the country. The artistic ceramics education aims to bring up artists eloquent in contemporary art here and abroad. Many national and international activities are being realized with this purpose. Studies examining physical environmental elements and the aesthetic and technical aspects of industrial products, and then regulating the harmony with human functions and senses are concluded as projects of Industrial Ceramics Drafts. The department is based on industrial foundations for educational purposes. Training becomes important for interpreting theoretical and applied information provided in a production.
The ceramics education starting at Fine Arts Academy of State was followed at Fine Arts Vocational School of Applied State founded by Turkish German cooperation in 1957. This school was made Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts in 1982; and ceramics department was made Ceramics and Glass Department. Education programs in this university also cover artistic and industrial studies.
First the Ceramics in Mimar Sinan University, later the Ceramics in Marmara University were accepted to the International Academy of Ceramics which is a side organization of UNESCO, with their successful studies and education level.
In the 1980's, Hacettepe University, University of Dokuz Eylul and Anatolia University began ceramics education. Ceramics graduates from Mimar Sinan University and Marmara University were mostly among the educational staff during the foundation level of these universities. Other than these, ceramics studies are made as elective at the department of fine arts of the Bosphorus University.
Even though ceramics has taken place in the program of Metallurgical Engineering of Istanbul Technical University in the field of engineering, ceramics engineering were first founded in the engineering faculties of Anatolia University in 1994 and Dumlupinar University.
Ceramics education is also given in faculties of education and schools for advanced vocational studies connected with many universities.
